Garbage Reminders
  • Any material that prevents the lid of the toter cart from closing flat is considered excess.  If you have excess garbage, your toter cart may not be emptied.
  • Excess garbage is the responsibility of the property owner. Excess garbage can be taken to Harwich Transfer Station or Wallaceburg Transfer Station for disposal. Cash-only fees will apply.
  • Material placed in the toter cart must be contained in a bag or box.
  • Toter carts that are not properly placed at the curb will not be emptied and is the responsibility of the property owner. For more information, see our Toter Cart Placement Instructions.
  • Collection times may vary week to week. However, if garbage is not at the curb prior to 7:00 am on collection day, you are not eligible for garbage pick-up that week.
  • Residents must return all garbage and recycling boxes to private property no later than 7:00 pm on the day of your collection.
  • The Municipality reserves the right to clean-up or collect garbage left at the curb and invoice the property owner accordingly.
  • Litter that is created as a result of crows or small animals ripping garbage bags open is the responsibility of the owner to clean up.
  • Garbage bags cannot weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs.) each.
  • Large items (i.e. mattresses, box springs, furniture) must be at the curb by 7:00 am the morning of your regular collection day in order for it to be flagged for the bulk collection truck to pick up. Each large item counts as one bag toward your weekly limit. For example, if you put out a large item, that means you can put out two bags of household waste beside the large item. Do not use the toter for the two bags.
  • Appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, freezers, washing machines, etc. are not accepted at the curb.  Please refer to transfer stations for disposal options or consider donating.
  • E-waste, tires and scrap metal items are also not accepted at the curb. Please refer to transfer stations for disposal options.
Residential Collection Limits
  • The garbage limit per week is one 95-gallon toter cart (lid closed flat) or any combination of up to three regular size garbage bags, bundles of brush, bulk items (i.e. furniture) and/or regular size bags of yard waste.
  • Bundles of brush must be tied securely weighing no more than 20 kg (44 lbs.) and dimensions not exceeding 5 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft.
  • One 95 gallon toter cart is equivalent to three garbage bags. One 68 gallon toter cart is equivalent to two garbage bags.
  • All items in excess of the limit, not properly contained or not in an approved container will be left at the curb. Items left at the curb are the responsibility of the owner to remove/clean up.
  • When placing a bulk item at the curb, do not use the toter cart that week as everyone's interpretation of how full/empty the cart is will be different. Use regular size garbage bag(s) for household waste instead.
