Sidewalk Plowing
There are 410 km of sidewalks within Chatham-Kent. Winter Control has been expanded to all municipal sidewalks. Sidewalk plowing will be done by internal staff and contractors based on the following classifications:
Class I
Downtown business areas will have snow and ice removed as close to the bare concrete as possible, plus spreading of salt and/or sand when required to prevent slip and falls. Work will start within 2 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 24 hours of the end of the snow event.
Class II
Mains, arterial, collector streets, bus routes, hospital areas, school areas and bridge structures will be plowed to a snowpack condition. Work will start within 12 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 24 hours of the end of a snow event.
Class III
Local residential and minor collector streets will be plowed to a snowpack condition. Work will start within 24 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 48 hours of the end of a snow event.
Class IV
Walkways or sidewalks in park areas would not be plowed under this contract.
 

Sidewalk Salting
CK Residents of every property outside of the “Downtown Business Areas” must salt and/or sand the sidewalks that abut their property. The owner/occupant are responsible to make sure you salt and/or sand in the following circumstances:

  1. Responsive: With 24 hours after ice has formed
Residents must salt, sand, or salt and sand the sidewalks abutting their property within 24 hours after the resident is aware that ice has formed.
AND
  1. Preventative: Within 24 hours after Notice from Municipality

Residents must salt, sand or salt and sand the sidewalks abutting their property within 24 hours after the Municipality releases a public notice of a substantial probability of ice formation. The Municipality will be delivering these notices through its website, social media and by providing a media release.
